4Excellent Laptop after a little tweaking.
By Jason01234
My primary uses for this laptop are writing software, editing PDFs, and other personal use. Overall, it is a great laptop, but needs some initial tweaking to run smoothly.

Pros:
Fast for its size: The 2.67Ghz core i5 is extremely fast for a laptop and 4gb of ram is plenty. Programs open quickly and PDF files are very smooth when using tablet mode. If you don't clog up the laptop with all kinds of gunkware, it will run better than you want it to. For me, using a fast touch screen is faster than using a mouse in a lot of applications.

Easy to use tablet: The tablet screen is very easy to swivel and the laptop is lightweight for its speed (3.8lbs, 5lbs with extra battery) The screen and form factor are also very easy for handling and viewing.

Battery expansion: The internal battery on this is rated at about 5 hours, but I get about 4hrs 20min out of it on low power mode. Note that this is after I removed a LOT of the default software that came with the computer. Using a higher power mode will probably get you 3hrs 30min on a full charge. The great thing about this laptop is the optional ultraslim battery (RX932AA). This will give you an additional 4+ hours on the system making your overall battery live 7-8 hours! Awesome for a full sized laptop! (Note that the RX932AA says its for the 2710p, but it works with the 2740p as well)

Cons:
HP Default Software: I removed a lot of the applications the tablet came with for several reasons. A) Not useful to me B) Free applications worked better C) Took up too much power

Customizing: The default touch screen driver that comes with the laptop doesn't work well. I had to replace it with this one: "sp49201.exe" (available on the HP support site, just Google it) and now everything works perfectly.

This is a great laptop if you need something portable with tablet functionality. After a little tweaking, it runs quickly. I would recommend this for a traveling businessman, student, or someone who really enjoys tablet functionality on a fast laptop. Though it's a little expensive, you definitely get what you pay for if you tweak it a little bit at the beginning.

4Decent product, Technical Glitches
By HFEngineer
I purchased this computer to be my off-site/client meeting computer because it was described as light weight and because it came with the touch sensitive screen. When I added the additional battery, the weight is not as light as i would have liked, but it is by no means heavy.

My one issue with this computer is that it randomly reboots itself without any warning or indication. I am not sure if it is a hardware issue, software issue, or what the problem is. I have spoken with HP, but they claim it is a Windows problem. I spoke with Microsoft, but they claim it is a HP software problem. Regardless, I cannot use it effectively for the purpose I purchased it for because I cannot risk it rebooting in the middle of a meeting with a client.

2HP never again
By Lucas
I bought an HP EliteBook 2740p because of its small size, lightweight form factor and seemingly sturdy finish. My initial impression of it was excellent and I started to use it for most of my Web-surfing and remote access to work via VPN. The built-in HSDPA module also impressed me because no external adapters are needed for 3G access.

Unfortunately after about 6 months of use it started to develop problems with its power switch. It powers up but then switches off immediately. I can still manage to switch it on after many tries and will have to send it back for repairs. A Google search reveals that this as a common problem with HP EliteBook notebooks.

This notebook is not cheap and this type of critical malfunction is unacceptable. HP should have sorted out this issue with their notebooks by now. What makes this even more disappointing is that I also own an HP EliteBook 2730, which gave me problems with its touch pad buttons. HP eventually had to replace the touch pad and I really hoped for a better experience this time around with the 2740p.

I learned my lesson now (although at great expense) and will never buy an HP Notebook again.
