Felt solid out of the box. Looks good. Rich feature set and a good price at just $649 (now just $599!).

Just take a look at the specs - this machine looks GREAT on paper. A8 AMD Quad core processor, 6 gigs of RAM (A 4GB stick & 2GB stick, both made by Samsung) is upgradable to 8GB, 640GB HD (the HD in all 3 of the dv6-6140us' I tried were made by Toshiba...what is this? coopetition?) For the most part it has everything it promises.

HOWEVER - I think I got a dud because the only issue / issues I have are with the display.

I also get the shadow on the start up in the lower right hand corner of the screen every time I turn on or wake up this laptop (just as noted by another reviewer).

When it was brand new, just out of the box, I got the horizontal lines streaking across the screen as did another reviewer. They appear all over the screen, random placement, horizontally. That hasn't happened since I was initially setting up the computer but now I get the same shadow he does in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

The screen also dims & brightens noticeably when scrolling up & down a page - most apparent when surfing the web. Completely random occurrence here again.

I'm hesitant to have this issue fixed as I'd rather have the PC replaced. It seems to be a rare malfunction but if you buy one be aware of this when you get yours & look out for it (someone told me that it had something to do with the settings on the GPU?).

Everything else works fine. This is a lot of PC for the money. No argument there.

I didn't think much of the "beatsaudio" at first when I played a CD on the PC. Then I watched a movie with some Skullcandy Titan In Ear Bud S2TTCB-047 (Black/Chrome)earbuds. The sound was really good. I took the earbuds out and adjusted the volume on WMP. That was when the sound quality improved. Nice for a laptop. Nothing really happened when I opened up the beatsaudio control panel to try & tweak the sound initially. It just got more & more distorted. Somehow, it seemed to wake itself up when I played the movie after removing the earbuds. Weird.

I was disappointed that HP's Mediasmart software suit is gone. You have to pay extra to get the features from the included software that were standard with the old Mediasmart package (the PC I bought that had it was last year's model - the hp dv6-3120us). Some people might find it "gimmicky" but the kids liked to play with "special effects" on the webcam and now I have to pay an extra $24.99 to add it to the included software on the new PC. If you want the "Ultra" version of Cyberlink's software for DVD's & Blue-Ray it's $59.99 for hp users (normally $79.99). Almost all the software is upgradable. If hp really wants to go head to head with the MPA or MBP, those sweet machines INCLUDE all the software you need for movies & music.

The fingerprint reader is very nice. Sometimes it takes a few tries but its better than entering passwords.

I was expecting more from the HD webcam. It's not "bad" by any means I just thought it would be better than what it is.
Wireless connection worked immediately during set up. Seemed to run slow so I went into the settings and adjusted it. Seems like that is a common thing here. You have to check & adjust settings to get what you want out of the PC.

Battery Life, for me, has been outstanding. Considering everything that is going on inside this laptop it is running longer than I expected. Almost 5 hours on a single charge.

This notebook runs very cool & very quiet. Even the optical drive doesn't make much noise when running at top speed. I can hear the Hard Drive when it's being accessed. It's not super loud but it is noticeable.

Since its still VERY new, & there is a lot more to explore, that is all I have for right now. I will continue to check it out until my last day for a full refund or replacement.

Due to the screen issue & only due to the screen issue - I would hesitate to recommend this PC to anyone at this time.

Hope this helps.

What's great about it: Processor, Storage space, memory, fingerprint reader, beats audio, battery life
What's not so great: The display / screen issues

After returning the initial dv6-6140us to Staples (horrible process) I bought another one from amazon after trying out an ASUS K53TA from Best Buy (cheap PC & it was slow) that was returned. I have to send the 2nd hp dv6-6140us back to amazon (I requested a replacement). What happened now? Well, the function keys are not responding after 1 day of ownership & the light around the touchpad is out. All I did was update the PC. Windows, Drivers, & BIOS updates from hp. Installed (Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 3-User). No idea why the function keys quit. They were working fine on day one. On day 2...gone.

I have a word to say about the "Xbox deal". It's OVER as of 8-15-11. Was looking forward to a free Xbox 360 but the deadline has passed.

Like another reviewer mentioned, I purchased it at $649.99. They dropped the price the next day to $599.99. It is not Amazon's policy to price match anymore but they were nice enough to honor the price difference. Amazon has been amazing. Their CS is top-notch.

The finish on the PC is fantastic. It doesn't show dust or fingerprints. That is a HUGE plus to me. It's actually brushed aluminum. Very classy.

The PC said it was only using 25% of the included 6GB of RAM. I was going to max it out to 8GB (16GB max capacity only applies to this PC when configured with an Intel i7 Quad Core processor). The 640GB HD is just under 600GB in reality but on the plus side it is a 7200 RPM drive (most Notebook PC's have a 5400 RPM drive).

1080p output is possible through the HDMI output to your HDTV. The included display can only support playback of up to 720p. The Blue Ray drive cannot burn hi-speed CD-R's & it will require software updates periodically according to the included literature. Just something to be aware of in my opinion.

beats audio does not make the speakers that are in this Notebook. They are made by Altec Lansing. Beats audio is the processing system - internally.

UPDATE as of 9/8/11:

Got my replacement from amazon on 9-6-11. They really need to include more than one piece of packing paper in the box. The box was damaged slightly & the hp box was also damaged. I contacted amazon & asked them if they wanted me to even bother opening it. Once again, there Customer Service is top-notch. They asked me to check if the PC was damaged. After unpacking it, everything looked OK. The corner of the box that was damaged held the battery, power cord, & power brick. So, if the box was going to take a hit, I guess this is the place you want it to happen. So far, no issues with the PC. I hope this one is a keeper because I actually like this PC.

This being my THIRD hp dv6-6140us I can tell you that the display is still acting a little erratic. It brightens & dims as I scroll up & down web pages.

The wireless adapter (built-in) on this 3rd model works intermittently. Don't get me wrong, it works. But 50% of the time it says there is no connection available. Then I check my connection, it finds the network, and all is well. It just doesn't find it AUTOMATICALLY all the time anymore.

The wireless adapter became more problematic as time went on. I contacted amazon & they asked that I contact hp to see if it was a defect or if it something I'm doing wrong. hp's live chat got me to a representative quickly and we went through the troubleshooting process and arrived at the conclusion that the wireless adapter was malfunctioning. I could send it in to hp to be repaired or I could send it back to amazon for a replacement. The display was also getting brighter & dimming randomly when scrolling through web pages. This was really annoying and none of the other "general' troubleshooting methods solved this issue with this Notebook so I chose to return it to amazon for a replacement.

The replacement arrived and I've had no issues with the wireless connection nor have I had any issues with the display lightening or darkening when scrolling up or down a web page.

Everything else is working so far. Hard to believe it took 4 attempts to get a good one (3 attempts from amazon). hp's quality seems to be slipping.

This is a really nice Notebook at a really good price ($599) and I would have had to pay a lot more to get something similar from another manufacturer. That is why I stuck with this model even though the previous 3 had issues.

Again, my hat is off to the amazon.com customer service team. They stuck with me through this and I finally got what I wanted.

The packaging department really needs to include more packing material around the Notebook when shipping it in my opinion. The outer box is [practically form fitting and one piece of packing paper just doesn't cut it - there is hardly any protection beyond the original hp box & internal packing material.

The brand of memory in this 4th 6140 is ELPIDA. Hard drive is still made Toshiba. I upgraded to the full 8GB capacity with a 4GB stick from G.SKILL.

Just to repeat - there are NO ISSUES with the screen randomly lightening & darkening on this 4th 6140us.
